CASE curriculum uses a blend of formative and summative assessment strategies. The curriculum is designed on the theory of spiraling student learning experiences by introducing new material and relating it to previously learned material to help the student understand the interconnectedness of the subject matter. CASE employs several strategies to ensure that student misconceptions are not present, or proficiency of skills and knowledge is learned prior to moving the student to the next set of information.

Formative assessment and reflection are major indicators of student preparedness for new material. Formative strategies include E-Moments, which are instructional exercises students perform to reinforce understanding and enhance peer interaction related to instruction. Another example is the use of strategic projects that build from a collection of previous activities to reinforce learning outcomes and engage students in synthesis exercises. Reflection questions are provided at the conclusion of every activity, project, or problem exercise. The reflection questions ensure that the student understands the concepts related to the lesson they are studying. The lesson concepts are the cornerstones of the chapter quizzes and End-of-Course summative examination.

In addition to these methods, CASE lessons feature a set of Essential Questions related to each lesson concept. The Essential Questions are provided to the student prior to the lesson as a tool to help the student internalize what questioning they should be asking about the subject matter. The Essential Questions also inspire inquiry toward deeper understanding about what they should be learning related to the lesson. Teachers use Essential Questions in their daily instruction in different ways to help promote these outcomes and provide a clear path for learning the concepts.

Teachers have access to summative assessment tools as part of the curriculum materials and the CASE Online system. Check for Understanding quizzes are provided at the end of every lesson. These are typically open-ended questions meant to test each concept of the lesson in a way to encourage deep understanding rather than rote memorization of facts and figures.

CASE Online is a web-based system designed to provide two summative assessment tools. Teachers can use an open database of questions to develop any type of summative assessment, such as mid-term or quarter examinations. This system will also administer the CASE End-of-Course (EoC) assessments. EoC exams are secure online tests. Each exam is aligned to course lesson concepts. The EoC questions are also are coded for cross-curricula subject matter, such as Next Generation Science Standard and Common Core Mathematics alignment.

Students who take the EoC examinations and meet the national cut score qualify for a certificate of completion from CASE. Teachers and administrators have the ability to correlate student performance on the EoC with specific academic standards or outcomes. The system provides an effective means to evaluate student proficiency related to lesson concepts of a CASE course.
